2 Peter 2 (NA28)
Discussion:
Ἐγένοντο (Aorist) and ἔσονται (future) a comparison of past and future. Just as there were false prophets so there will be false teachers.
False teachers who will secretly introduce heresies of destruction and who deny the Lord who purchased them, and they will bring upon themselves the same destruction.
So Peter is warning the seriousness of this.
Discussion:
v.3b: their destruction will come quickly, but it is not asleep, the condemnation will come. (Because God is eternal, but we experience the passage of time, we cannot comprehend). Future judgement is still seeping into the present.
Discussion:
Parallelism possibly
A– starting in 1:16-20 apostles, before them there were the true prophets did not make up or fabricate myths. Then true prophets.
B — 2:1 false prophets and then in the future there will be false teachers.
Judgement:
2:4- 10a examples of how judgement has come but the righteous are saved. Similar language in 2 Peter and Jude: Enoch the angels are in Gen 6 that bore children with women. Jude quotes from Enoch. 2 Peter — some kind of putting of spiritual beings in some kind of judgement, waiting for judgement. People disagree where you can find this in the OT. e.g. 1 Peter 3:19.
Protasis 2:4 – 8 (if _ God this) and then the apodosis is 2:9
if the angels
if during the flood
if the cities of Sodom and Gommorah
if Lot comes off as righteous, interesting given Lot’s failures. Perhaps gives us a lens into that these are saved because they are righteous, in that they are perfect, but they are the ones who God rescues.
Then 2:9 God can rescue the godly even from the most unrighteous place. The godly are not perfect, yet because of their faith and seeking to please God, they can have confidence.
